Gender in Music – The MaLisa Foundation at the Reeperbahnfestival

At this year’s Reeperbahnfestival in Hamburg, the MaLisa Foundation was actively involved in four events. September 22, 2022 was dedicated to our new research “Gender in Music – Charts, Works and Festival Stages”. It was a day full of memorable moments, discussions, encounters – and music.

The Reeperbahn Festival is the biggest club festival in Europe and the largest platform for international pop culture and the music industry. In 2021, the MaLisa Foundation and Keychange presented their Study on Gender Diversity in the Music Industry and Music Usage at the RBF. This year on September 22, the new research Gender in Music – Charts, Works and Festival Stages, initiated by the MaLisa Foundation and conducted in cooperation with GEMA and Music S Women, was discussed at the Reeperbahn Festival.

The MaLisa Foundation was actively involved in a series of four events on the topic of gender equality. The day started with a networking breakfast of GEMA, VUT, Music Women* Germany and the MaLisa Foundation. At the panel “The End of the Buddy Business? Who will shape the music of the future?” Anna Groß presented the research results on “Gender in Music” and discussed with representatives of GEMA, Keychange and WDR ways to achieve more equality of opportunity in the industry. Afterwards, the MaLisa Foundation, Music Women* Germany / Music S Women* and GEMA hosted the reception “Gender in Music – Let’s Talk!”. The following Fem* Rap & Production Showcase was presented by MaLisa Stiftung and moderated by poet & singer Julia Engelmann and founder Elisabeth Furtwängler aka KERFOR. Nashi44, Älice, Babyjoy, Vita and KERFOR wowed the audience, which also included founder Maria Furtwängler.

The excellent response to the “Gender in Music Day” at the Reeperbahn Festival gives the MaLisa Foundation and its partners tailwind for its further endeavors to advance gender equality in the music industry.
